photoblog image Hell's Gate Lighthouse

Hell's Gate Lighthouse

Called ''Hells Gate'' by the convicts as they knew once they went through they were entering the hell that was Sarah Island. Considering that in 1828  8004 lashes were issued.

Punishment Record:

Thomas Kent -12 Lashes, telling lies.

John James- 36 lashes, shoving a fellow prisoner.

William crafts- 12 lashes, Trying to sell brooms

Cornelius Quin- 25 Lashes, Trying to sell soap

Richard Sheridan- 50 lashes Getting shoes mended.

The name was very apt.

It was a lousy start to the trip with wind and rain and this was one of a very few pictures taken on the way there. Luckily the rain cleared just as we arrived at Sarah Island.

Head South and the next stop is Antartica. Our boat went through and up the Gordon River, the entrance to a vast Heritage listed wilderness.

As a rule, Aussie, I LOVE lighthouses, but this one leaves a different feel, knowing the history. (sigh)

So, if the inmates had it miserable, why should you have a brilliant time? Heh.

Some of those punishments seem so unreal, related to the offence. If getting your shoes mended could count as an offence.
What a story! The lighthouse does not seem to be well maintained. There are bushes growing on it.
As most of the convicts came from the UK the chances are they were lucky insofar as the alternative was probably hanging back at home. Not a good time to be caught committing a petty crime!
What a story behind this picture Aussie!
I'd never guess that story from the photo.
