What an odd looking bird this is - lol! Great capture, though. (:o)

And is that a gum tree, Aussie?

I have seen a handful of these birds while on SC--my first times ever. It's funny, because even in America we grew up singing the Kookaburra song but had no idea what it was or what it looked like.

This is a wonderful shot. First, I love the way this bird looks. I know nothing about them, but he's built like the bird-equivalent of a sports car. All business.

Second, I love how the limbs form another frame for the photo of the bird. They draw my eyes to him as well.

They are so much like the belted kingfishers and are in the same family. I was so happy to see one when I was on a stop on the Great Ocean Road and hear it's unique call.
